Our place, Chhotanagpur Rope Works Pvt. Ltd., is located out in Mahilong. It is a bit different from being in the middle of a crowded city center. We have a bit more space out here to deal with the ropes and the materials we use. Making ropes takes up a lot of room because of the lengths involved, so being in Mahilong gives us that breathing space. The air is a bit clearer here, though the work is still heavy and physical. Most of our days are spent checking the machines and making sure the strands are coming together right. It can be a bit repetitive, but there is a certain rhythm to it that you get used to after a few years. We aren't big on fancy decorations or anything like that. The factory floor is all business, with coils of rope stacked up and the smell of fiber in the air. We have a small office area where the paperwork gets handled, but most of us are usually out where the action is. When the weather gets really humid, the work feels a bit tougher, but we just take our breaks under the shade. It’s a quiet enough area compared to the city, but we stay busy enough to keep the days moving fast. We’ve been making ropes in this spot for a while, and it’s just the way we make our living. There is no big sign outside, just the building where the work happens every day.
