Our garage sits right at the Laxmi Nagar Chowk in Hehal. If you know Ratu Road, you know how busy it gets with all the trucks and cars zooming by all day. We’ve been working out of this spot for a long time. There’s always oil on the floor no matter how much we sweep it up. Most days we are under a car or have a hood popped open. It’s a messy job, but it’s what we do here. The tools are scattered on the benches and we usually have the radio playing some local station to pass the time. It gets very dusty being so close to the main road intersection. Sometimes customers just drop their bikes or cars off and come back after they finish their work. We don’t have a fancy waiting room, just a couple of plastic chairs outside under the shade of the awning. The sun hits the front of the shop pretty hard in the morning. We take a break for lunch around one, usually grabbing something from the vendor nearby. There’s always someone honking out at the chowk. It’s a noisy place to work but we are used to it by now. We handle the engines and the mechanical stuff mostly. My hands are usually stained black by noon. It’s just the way it is when you’re fixing things all day. We try to get through the queue as fast as we can, but some jobs take longer than we expect when we first start on them.
