If you walk down Church Road, you’ll find us right there where the street gets a bit quieter. It’s a pet clinic, so you can probably imagine what it’s like inside most days. There’s usually a dog barking in the waiting room or a cat staring out from a carrier. We spend a lot of our time cleaning up after the animals and trying to keep them calm while the vet does the checkups. It’s a small space, so it can feel a bit crowded when a large breed comes in for an appointment. We don’t have any slick receptionists; it’s usually just one of us handling the phones and the animals at the same time. The floor is tile because it’s easier to mop, and we have to mop it a lot. Some days are slow and we just sit around chatting, but then three emergencies will walk in at once and things get hectic. We’ve seen all sorts of pets here over the years, not just dogs and cats. People bring in whatever they have. It gets loud and sometimes it smells like antiseptic and wet fur, but that’s the reality of a pet clinic on Church Road. We just do the work, talk to the owners, and try to make sure the animals are handled okay. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s what we do every day. We just keep our heads down and get through the schedule.
