Our workshop is located at 2629 on Road D-5, right by the Kranti Gate in the GIDC Lodhika area of Rajkot. Srv Metals Pvt. Ltd. isn't a place with glass walls or carpets. It’s a solid concrete floor covered in metal shavings and oil spots. We spend our days around lathes and milling machines that make a lot of racket. You have to shout a bit if you want to be heard over the cutting tools. Most of the guys here have been working with metal for years, so they don’t need much instruction. We get raw material delivered on big flatbed trucks that block the gate for a while. The sun beats down on the corrugated roof, making it pretty warm inside by midday. We have a small corner with a water cooler where everyone gathers for a break. It's not the cleanest job in the world. Your clothes end up smelling like coolant and iron by the time you go home. We don't spend much time on paperwork unless it's an invoice or a shipping note. Most of the time is spent measuring parts with calipers and making sure the machines are running smooth. Sometimes a tool breaks and we have to spend an hour fixing it, which puts us behind. But that’s just part of being in a machine shop. We just keep our heads down and finish the work that’s on the floor today.
