Gautam Electric & Appliances is situated on Vaniyawadi Main Road, right near Sanjay Dairy in the Gayatri Nagar area. If you can smell the milk and sweets from the dairy, you’re pretty much at our doorstep. We have a lot of stuff crammed into this shop, from ceiling fans and light bulbs to all kinds of wires and switchboards. It’s a bit of a mess sometimes because we’re always taking things apart to see why they stopped working. The main road is always buzzing with scooters and people going to the dairy, so we get a lot of walk-in traffic. Someone always needs a new fuse or a bulb replaced, and we spend a lot of time standing behind the counter giving advice on which wire is best for their house. The shelves are packed all the way to the ceiling, and I’m usually the only one who knows where the small screws are hidden. It’s a local business through and through. We don’t have a website or anything like that; people just know we’re here on the corner of Gayatri Nagar Main Road. On hot days, the shop gets really warm because of all the electronics, but we just turn on one of the floor fans and keep going. It’s a simple life, fixing things and selling parts to our neighbors, and we’ve been doing it this way for years. It is noisy and crowded but we like it.
