About Jai Shri Shyam Moorti Kala Udhyog – Gifts in Rajgarh
Our workshop is located in Nayagaon Bolka, which is a small village near the Post Office in Shri Chand Pura. We are in the Rajgarh Tehsil of Alwar District. The specific area we are in is known as Moorti Mohalla because so many people here do the same kind of work. Making idols is what our family has done for as long as I can remember. The village is quiet, away from the big city noise, which is good for focusing on the fine details of the carvings. We work mostly with marble and other stones found in this part of Rajasthan. The workspace is just a large room with high ceilings to keep it cool, though it still gets very hot in May and June. We have blocks of stone piled up outside in the yard. Sometimes cows wander past while we are working. It’s a very local life. We don't use the internet much or do big marketing. People just know where we are in Moorti Mohalla and come to see us. My hands are usually sore by the end of the week from holding the chisels. We take pride in the fact that every piece is done by us, not a machine. It takes a long time to finish one moorti, and we don't like to rush. The community here is all about this craft, so we help each other out when someone needs a hand with a heavy slab.
