Rani Bazar is always a bit chaotic, and being near the railway crossing doesn't make it any quieter. We are located with Gupta Enterprises here in Bikaner. You can hear the trains passing by quite often, and everything shakes just a little bit when the heavy ones go through. It’s a dusty spot, mostly because of the trains and the desert wind that blows in. We handle the Shree Cement Ltd. side of things from this office. It’s a practical space, filled with the smell of old paper and sometimes a bit of grease from the nearby shops. Gupta ji is usually around, and we share a few jokes while the tea cools down. People come here because they know we are reliable and have been around for years. They don't expect a fancy waiting room or air conditioning. They just want to know when the truck will arrive at their site so they can get on with their building. We keep our logs in big registers and try to stay ahead of the orders. The heat in Bikaner can be really something in the summer, so we have a cooler that makes a lot of noise but keeps us from melting. It’s an honest way to spend the day. We see a lot of familiar faces from the neighborhood. Every time the gate at the crossing goes down, we get a few minutes of quiet before the traffic starts honking again.
