Indo Chains Pvt Ltd is situated right in the heart of the Industrial Area Bhanpuri, over by P.O. Birgaon. It’s a gritty part of town, which makes sense because making chains is a gritty job. There is always a layer of oil or grease on the worktables, and the sound of metal clinking against metal is something you hear all day long. We start our shifts pretty early before the sun gets too high and the heat becomes unbearable in the factory. The warehouse is a big open space with rows of heavy chains hanging from the racks or coiled up on pallets. Birgaon is nearby, so a lot of us live just a short commute away. We usually bring our own lunches and sit in the small break area near the back. The air always smells a bit like iron and machine oil. It’s not the kind of place where you’d want to wear your best clothes, that’s for sure. We don’t spend much time on the computer, mostly we are out on the floor checking the links and making sure the machinery is running like it should. Sometimes a machine breaks down and we have to spend a few hours getting it back in order. The trucks come in through the main Bhanpuri gate to pick up the orders, and that’s usually the busiest time of the day. We just keep our heads down and do the work.
