Sanjay Saw Mills

If you stand right outside the railway station and look across the road, you’ll see our gate. Sanjay Saw Mills has been here for years, and the sound of the trains is something we don't even notice anymore. The air always smells like fresh cut pine or teak, depending on what we are working on that day. It’s a messy job, there is sawdust everywhere no matter how much we sweep it up. We get all kinds of people coming in, from builders needing big beams to someone just looking for a few planks to fix a fence at home. The saws make a lot of noise, so you have to shout a bit if you want to be heard when the blades are running. We have these old log piles in the yard that the local kids sometimes try to climb on. My father used to run this place before me, and not much has changed since then, except maybe the trucks are a bit bigger now. We spend a lot of time measuring things and making sure the cuts are straight. It is hard work on the back, especially when it’s humid. Sometimes a train stops right in front of us and people look out the windows at the stacks of wood while they wait for the signal. We just keep doing our thing, day in and day out, making sure the wood is ready for whoever needs it.
