Our place, Karuna Nilaya, is tucked away right behind the Manjunath Talkies in Sindhnur. That is where you will find us busy dealing with chillies most days of the week. If you are familiar with the Sindhnur area, then you already know how important the chilli trade is to the local economy here. Our workplace is usually covered in that fine red dust that seems to get into everything, no matter how much you clean. It is a tough business to be in because you are always at the mercy of the weather and how it affects the yearly crops. When the harvest turns out well, the whole yard is full of bright color and the sounds of people shouting out their prices. When the season is bad, we all just sit around and worry about the future together. We are not doing anything fancy or high-tech here. We simply buy the chillies, sort them out, and sell them to whoever needs them. The bags are very heavy, and your skin can really start to sting by the end of a long day if you are not careful with the spice. It is a very local operation, and we know almost all the other merchants working behind the talkies. We do not have any big corporate structure or fancy titles. It is more about knowing the land and the people we deal with. We just keep our heads down and do the work.
