Purnea Atulya Makhana Fed Producer Company Limited

We are located in the Uphrail Tola of Purnia East, right near where Mukesh Kumar lives. Our company is all about makhana, which is the main crop around here. We are a producer company, meaning we are made up of the people who actually grow the stuff. The process of getting makhana ready for people to eat is actually quite difficult. It starts with wading into the ponds to get the seeds, and then they have to be dried and popped over a fire. We have a small area where we do the sorting and the bagging. It is very manual work and our hands often get burnt or scratched during the busy season. We aren't a big corporation with fancy offices in the city. We work out of a simple building right here in the village. We started this company because we wanted to make sure the farmers in Purnia East were getting a better deal. Before, we had to sell to middle-men who took most of the profit. Now we try to do more of it ourselves. We don't have any marketing experts or a sales team. We just rely on the quality of our makhana to get noticed. The office is just a small room where we keep our books and talk to the members. It is a lot of work and we often worry about the weather, but we are glad to be doing this together. We just take it one harvest at a time.
