Down here in Satasankha, life moves pretty slow compared to the city. Our place in Subalpur Colony is where we all gather. It’s not just a business; it’s where the local folks bring what they’ve made at home. We have a lot of women from the nearby villages who come in with their work every week. The Rural Association Development Of Handicrafts sounds like a big name, but we are just a small group working out of a basic building. There are usually bicycles leaned up against the walls and goats wandering around outside. We have a few big rooms where we sort through the handicrafts. It gets dusty, and the fans overhead just move the warm air around. We spend a lot of time checking the quality of things. When the rains come, the roof leaks a little in the corner, so we have to move all the stock to the other side. It’s a bit chaotic, but we manage. We just want to make sure the people here have a place to bring their crafts so they can earn something for their families.
