Sankar Rice Mill

Sankar Rice Mill is located out in Bhatar on the Burdwan Katwa Road. If you know the Burdwan district, you know this is the heart of rice country. Our mill has been standing here for quite some time. It’s a large, open structure that gets pretty noisy when the machines are running full tilt. We spend our time processing paddy that comes in from the local fields. There’s always a layer of fine dust over everything, no matter how much we sweep. That is just part of the job. We have a few sheds for storage and a small area where we keep the books. The road outside is busy with trucks and tractors most of the day. We don't have a marketing team or anything like that. We just rely on the fact that people know we’ve been here for years. The guys working the machines have been with us through many seasons. We know the rhythm of the harvest and when to expect the busiest weeks. It’s hard, physical labor. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait around for it to come back on, which is just part of living in this area. We usually sit outside by the road during breaks and watch the traffic go by. It’s a simple business. We take the grain, we mill it, and we send it out. We don’t try to make it sound more complicated than it is.
