Down in Bulbulitala, near Khalispur, our shop sits right on Bitra Road. It is a busy enough spot, especially when the school kids are walking home or the buses are rumbling past toward Kalna. We’ve been at this location in East Burdwan for a while now, and the building has its quirks, like that one window that doesn't quite close all the way when it rains. Inside, it's pretty simple. We have the counters where we keep the gold and the silver ornaments. Usually, it's just a few of us here, and we spend a lot of time just organizing things or talking to folks who wander in from the neighborhood. Some people come in knowing exactly what they want, maybe a heavy bangle or a small nose ring, and others just want to see what the current price is today. We don't have fancy lights or a big air conditioner that works all the time, but it’s a comfortable place to sit down. We usually have the radio playing some old songs in the background while we work. If the power goes out, which happens sometimes around here, we just light a couple of candles and keep going. Most of the people who come by are friends of friends or people who live just a few lanes over. We just try to keep things honest and do our work without making too much of a fuss about it. It is just a regular shop for regular people.
