Down here at Samruddhi in the Ajinkyatara Industrial Estate, things stay pretty loud. Being on Singhgad Road means there is always a truck or a bike passing by outside. We’ve got a lot of heavy parts stacked up in the corners and the floor is mostly concrete that’s seen better days. The guys usually have grease on their hands by ten in the morning and the sound of tools is just part of the background. It gets quite warm in the summer because the roof is high and the fans only do so much. We move a lot of equipment around every day to make space for whatever new project comes in. There is a small office area tucked away where the paperwork stays, but most of the action happens out on the floor. We’ve had the same tea guy coming by for years and he knows exactly when we need a break. The industrial estate has its own rhythm and we are just one part of it. Sometimes the power goes out and we all just sit around and talk until it comes back on. It’s not a shiny place but it works for what we do. We mostly focus on getting the machinery right and making sure nothing breaks while we are testing it. It’s hard work and the days feel long, but we’ve been at this address for a while now. The metal doors are heavy and loud when they slide shut at night.
