Down in Shukarwar Peth, you’ll find our rubber workshop at 649. It’s an old part of Pune and the streets are narrow. We’ve been working with rubber parts for a long time. The smell of raw rubber is something you just get used to after the first week. We have some heavy presses and old molds that still work better than the new stuff. It’s just me and a couple of helpers most days. We don't wear suits or have meetings. We just look at the drawings people bring in and see if we can make the part. Sometimes the molds need a bit of cleaning or the heat isn't just right, so we have to adjust things on the fly. It's a messy job. Our hands are usually black by the end of the shift. We aren't trying to impress anyone with a fancy lobby. We just have a small bench where you can sit while we talk about the order. We get a lot of repeat work because we don't try to overcharge. People know we are honest about what we can do. The rain in Pune can make the walls damp in the monsoon, but we keep the stock high on pallets. It's just a regular industrial shop doing its bit every day. The tea guy comes at four and that's our favorite time.
