Shelar Furniture is located in the Yojana Complex, right in the Narayan Peth area. It’s room 502, so you have to come up to find us. Narayan Peth is one of those old parts of the city where the lanes are narrow and there is a lot of history in the buildings. We have been working with wood and furniture for a long time. Our space isn't like those big showrooms you see in malls. It’s a place where you can see the wood shavings on the floor and smell the varnish. We spend our days cutting, sanding, and putting pieces together. Sometimes we are working on a simple cupboard and other times it’s a custom bed frame that someone asked for. We use hand tools mostly, along with a few power saws that make a lot of noise. Because we are in a complex, we have to be careful about when we do the loudest work so we don't bother the neighbors too much. People usually come to us because they want something specific that they can't find in a regular store. We take our time with the joints and the finish because if you rush wood, it shows. It’s a quiet kind of work, even with the saws going. You just get into a rhythm and keep going until the piece looks right. We don't have a big staff, just a couple of us who know how to handle a plane and a chisel. People often bring their own sketches and we try to make sense of them.
