Om Tyre Works

Om Tyre Works is situated at Shop No B 5 in Ideal Colony, right on Paud Road in Kothrud. We are quite near MIT College, so we see a lot of students on scooters zooming by all day. Our shop is mostly filled with stacks of tyres and the smell of old rubber. It is a small space, mostly just enough to fit the air compressor and some tools. We spend a lot of time squatting down on the pavement checking for punctures or filling up air. It is a simple job but it keeps us on our toes. Sometimes the traffic on Paud Road gets so loud we can barely hear ourselves talking. We have been at Survey No 129 for quite some time now. Locals know they can just roll in when their wheel looks low. We do not have a big waiting room or anything, just a bench outside under the shade. The work is mostly manual, using levers to pry tyres off rims and checking for nails. It gets greasy and our clothes are usually stained with black marks. Rain makes the floor slippery, so we have to be careful when moving the heavy stuff. We just keep doing what we do, one wheel at a time. It is not a glamorous business, but every vehicle needs good rubber to keep moving safely. Most days end with us washing the grime off our hands and locking up the heavy shutters. It is a steady rhythm here in Kothrud.
