We’ve been here at Manik Moti Complex in Katraj for a good while now. Units 102 and 103 are usually filled up with tires stacked high against the walls. It’s a bit cramped sometimes, especially when a big shipment comes in and we have to shuffle everything around to find the right size for someone. Working with rubber all day means your hands are always black and the smell of new tires never really leaves your clothes. People around Katraj know where we are because we’re right here in the complex. Some days are slow and we just sit and watch the traffic go by outside, and other days it’s just non-stop lifting and fitting. We don’t have fancy waiting rooms or anything like that. It’s just a shop where we do the work. My father started this and now I’m the one dealing with the suppliers and the local guys who drop by. The floor is usually a bit dusty and the fan makes a clicking noise that we’ve just gotten used to over the years. We keep the ledger on a small desk in the corner under a bright light. It’s not a glamorous job but it’s what we do. If you walk into Manik Moti, you’ll see the Kalpraj Tyres sign hanging there, probably a bit faded from the sun now. We just try to get things done and get home on time most days.
