Himalaya Traders

If you head down to the Market Yard, you’ll find us at Sahakar Bhavan. Himalaya Traders is right opposite Hotel Utsav, which is where most of our visitors end up parking their cars. The market is a frantic place from five in the morning until late at night. There is always the smell of spices or grains in the air and the sound of handcarts rattling on the pavement. Inside our space, it’s mostly just shelves and bags. We don’t bother with much decoration because the inventory takes up all the room anyway. The floor is concrete and stays cool even when it’s boiling outside. Sometimes the elevators in Sahakar Bhavan act up, so we end up using the stairs quite a bit. It’s a lot of manual work, checking weights and moving stock around. The guys from the hotel across the street come over to chat sometimes during their break. We drink a lot of tea while we wait for the next delivery truck to arrive. It’s not a fancy life, but it’s what we do. The paperwork is mostly kept in metal cabinets that have been here since the start and they squeak every time you open them. You get used to the dust and the noise after a few weeks. It’s just the way the Market Yard operates every single day. We usually close up once the sun goes down and the market slows.
