Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceutical is right on the Mumbai-Pune Road in Pimpri. It’s a very busy stretch of road and you can hear the traffic all day long. The facility is quite large and it’s been here for a long time. It’s one of those places that feels like a small town inside the gates. We have many departments and everyone is busy with their own tasks, whether it’s in the labs or the packaging sections. Walking from one end of the compound to the other takes a good few minutes. The buildings are older, built in that solid style that lasts for decades. There is a lot of green space around the structures though, which makes it feel a bit more relaxed than the industrial area outside. We have a lot of staff coming in on buses and cycles every morning. The canteen is usually the busiest spot around noon. It’s not a flashy corporate office with modern art; it’s more about concrete floors and functional equipment. We deal with a lot of different pharmaceutical processes here, so there is always something going on. Sometimes the smell of chemicals is quite strong, but you get used to it after the first week. We just keep our heads down and do the work that needs doing. Pimpri is a noisy place, but inside our walls, we have our own rhythm that we follow every day. It's a big operation but it feels like a community once you are finally inside.
