You can find us at the Shree Chatrapati Shivaji Market Yard in Gultekdi. We have a few different spots here, including numbers 17, 18, and 19 in the banana section, plus another area at 907 for the rest of the fruit. The work starts very early in the morning for us, long before the sun even comes up. Big trucks arrive loaded with crates, and we have to get everything sorted and ready for the buyers. The market yard is a loud and busy place with people shouting and carts moving in every direction. We spend our hours checking the quality of the produce and arranging the big bunches of bananas. The floor is usually covered in stalks and bits of wooden packaging by the time mid-morning rolls around. It is a very hands-on job, and your hands usually end up stained or sticky from handling the fruit all day. We talk to the farmers who bring their crops and the retailers who come here to buy in bulk for their own shops. There is no air conditioning, just the big open stalls and the strong smell of ripening fruit. Sometimes it is very hectic and we have to move fast to get things sold while they are still fresh. It is an honest life that keeps us busy all year.
