Our shop, Champion Battery, is right on Sola Road in Shukrawar Peth, house number 1048. It’s a small place. It's mostly filled with heavy black batteries and rolls of wire. I’ve been working here since I was a teenager. The smell of acid and lead is something you just get used to after a while. We don’t have any fancy displays. There is no waiting room with AC. Usually, customers just stand on the sidewalk while we check their car or inverter. It’s a busy street. There’s always honking in the background. My hands are almost always stained with grease. We keep a few chairs in the back for when it’s slow, but that’s not very often. We mostly help people whose cars won’t start or who need backup power for their homes. Shukrawar Peth is an old part of town. The buildings are close together and the lanes are narrow. We have a regular delivery of new stock every Tuesday. That makes the shop even more crowded. I try to keep the tools organized. They always end up scattered by noon. It’s just me and two other guys running the show. We aren’t trying to be the biggest shop in town. We are just trying to keep everyone’s lights on. If you see the stack of old casings outside, you’ve found us. People know us for being honest about what can be fixed and what needs replacing.
