M.T.M. Engineering & Rewindings

M.T.M. Engineering & Rewindings is situated at No:2, Thirukanur Patti. We are right on the Pudukkottai-Thanjavur Main Road, very close to the Tneb office. It’s a spot that sees a lot of traffic, so there is always a layer of road dust on the front step. We spend a lot of our time sitting on low stools, carefully winding copper wire into motor cores. It’s tedious work that needs a lot of focus so the wires don't cross or snap. The shop is filled with the smell of varnish and burnt electrical parts. People bring in their pump motors from the farms or ceiling fans that stopped working during the hot season. We have a few old workbenches that have seen better days, but they are solid and get the job done. The main road can be quite noisy with all the buses honking, but we barely notice it anymore. Sometimes we have motors stacked up to the ceiling waiting to be picked up. It’s just me and a couple of others working here. We don't use any high-tech computers for our work; it is all done by hand and by eye. We take our lunch under the shade of the small tree out front. It is a simple way to make a living, helping people get their machines running again so they can get back to their own work.
