Ayyanar Ice Company

Ayyanar Ice Company is located at No: 1, Sathira Street in Kandarvakottai. This isn't really the kind of place where you sit down to eat a sundae. We mostly deal with the big blocks and the bulk stuff for other businesses. The work starts very early here, often before the sun is even up, because that is when the trucks need to load. Kandarvakottai gets quite hot in the summer, so the ice is important for the local shops and the people moving fresh goods. Sathira Street is narrow, so it can be a bit of a squeeze when the deliveries are happening in the morning. We spend a lot of time checking the machinery. If the compressor stops, we have a big problem on our hands very quickly. The floor is almost always wet, so we all wear rubber boots while we work to keep our feet dry. It’s a bit loud with the motors running all the time, but you stop noticing the noise after the first hour. Most of the people around here know us as the place with the cold mist coming out the door. We don't have any fancy decorations on the walls, just an old calendar and some tools. It is hard work, lifting the heavy slabs, and your hands stay cold for a long time even after you leave for the day. We just focus on keeping the machines running and the ice solid for whoever needs it.
