Surya Terracotta Handicrafts

You can find us at 12/76 on the Auroville Road in the Kuilapalayam area. It is a beautiful part of the world, though the road can get quite dusty with all the tourists and locals going back and forth. Our workshop and shop are right there where we work with the clay. Terracotta is a messy business, so there is usually red dust on our hands and clothes. We have different pieces sitting out on the shelves or even on the ground sometimes. It is not a sterile environment at all. It smells like earth and water most of the time. We live and work around here, so it’s a very personal thing for us. The Kuilapalayam village has a lot of creative energy, and we are just one part of that. We spend hours shaping things and waiting for them to dry. It is a slow process, but we aren't in any huge rush. The traffic on Auroville Road passes by constantly, and sometimes people stop in because they see something they like from the street. We don't do much in terms of advertising; we just put the items out and let people look. It’s a quiet, hands-on life. The sun sets over the trees and we pack things up for the next day. It is just what we do here in our little corner, making things by hand and keeping the tradition going.
