Our workshop is at 14/549 on P.R.T Street in Dharmavaram. This town is famous for its silk and weaving, and Sree Kanaka Durga Handloom Weaversproducer Company Limited is right in the thick of it. The street is usually busy with people moving bundles of cloth around. Inside our building, it’s a bit more focused. We have weavers who have been at this for decades. They don't need instructions anymore; they just know the patterns by heart. We deal with a lot of handloom work, which is slower than what the big factories do, but we think it has more heart. We don't have a big fancy office with glass walls. It’s a regular building with concrete floors and plenty of shelves for the finished goods. Sometimes the dye smells are strong, but you stop noticing after an hour. We try to work together to get better prices for our materials since we are a producer company. It helps the smaller weavers stay in business. We don't talk much about visions or goals. We just talk about the price of silk and when the next festival is coming up. It’s a local life and we are happy to be part of the Dharmavaram weaving tradition. We just keep our heads down and keep the shuttles flying across the looms every single day. That's all there is to it.
