Our business, K. R. Sea Food, takes up a pretty large space from Plot No. 179 all the way to 187. Being in the seafood trade means our day starts much earlier than most people’s. Usually, the first lights are on long before the sun even starts to come up. We get the fresh catch in and then the real work begins with sorting, cleaning, and getting everything onto the ice as fast as possible. It’s a wet and cold environment, which is necessary to keep everything from spoiling. You’ll see plenty of crates stacked up and people moving quickly to get the fish processed before the day gets too hot. The smell of the ocean is always lingering around the place, which you get used to after a while. We have large cold storage rooms that we have to monitor constantly to make sure the temperature stays right where it needs to be. It’s a lot of physical labor, lifting heavy boxes and dealing with the meltwater that constantly runs across the floor. Our boots are always wet, and our hands are usually cold, but that’s just the nature of working with seafood. We don't have a fancy storefront; it’s more of a distribution hub where the focus is on moving the product out to the markets. It's a busy, damp place, but it’s how we’ve been operating for many years now.
