Hina Brick Field

We are based in Village Amaria, which is part of the Amariya Taluka. Our brick field is very close to the bus stop, so we see the buses coming and going all day. It’s a dusty spot, but it’s home for us. We make the standard bricks that everyone uses for their houses and walls around the district. The work depends entirely on the sun. If it's cloudy, we worry. If it rains, we have to cover everything with plastic sheets. It’s a lot of running around when a storm comes. We have a few simple kilns. The smoke goes up and you can see it from the road. My family has been doing this for a long time. We aren't experts in anything else, just making bricks. The workers come from the village and we all know each other's families. It's a community thing. Sometimes we sit by the bus stop and have tea when the work is done. We don't do much in terms of marketing. Our name is just painted on a board by the entrance. If people need bricks, they know where the field is. We deal with a lot of mud and dirt every day. It gets under your fingernails and never really comes out. But the bricks come out solid, and that’s what matters. We just keep the routine going, day after day, near the bus stop. It’s hard work, but we are used to it.
