Our place is out in Pettaivaithalai, right where the air smells a bit like the fields and the factory work. It’s been here for generations, really. Everyone in the village knows someone who works here or used to back in the day. The shift change is the loudest part of the day. You see people coming and going on their cycles or just walking down the main road towards the gate. The machinery hums all day and night, it’s a sound you just get used to after a week on the job. Inside the office, it’s mostly just us trying to keep the records straight. There’s a lot of paperwork because of how big the operations are, but we keep it simple and honest. We drink a lot of tea while we go over the numbers in the ledger. The weather gets really hot in the afternoons, and the fans just move the warm air around, but we don't complain much about it. It’s steady work and it puts food on the table. We see the farmers coming in with their loads, and there's always a bit of talk about the rain or how the crop is looking this year. It feels like a big family even if it’s a large company. We don't have any flashy signs or modern glass walls. It’s just old brick and concrete that’s seen a lot of history. Sometimes the internet goes slow, and we have to wait to send emails, which gives us a chance to actually talk to each other.
