Up here in Idukki, things move a bit slower than in the city. Our place is the Koliekanam Estate. It’s a big stretch of land and there is always something that needs doing. Whether it’s checking on the plants or fixing a fence, the work never really stops at Bethel Plantations Pvt Ltd. The weather changes fast in these hills. One minute it’s sunny and the next, the mist rolls in and you can’t see the end of the road. We have a small office on the estate where we keep the records and handle the payroll for the workers. It’s an old building, nothing special, but it stays cool even when it’s hot out. Being in Dist. Idukki means we are surrounded by green all the time. Sometimes the rain gets so heavy we have to stop everything for a few hours. We don’t have fancy marketing teams or anything like that. We just focus on the land and the crop. People who work here have been with us for years. We know the soil and the way the water runs down the slopes after a storm. It’s hard work and your boots are always muddy, but it’s a good life. We take things one day at a time and try to keep the estate running smooth. There’s always a lot of talk about the weather and how the harvest might look. It’s just how things go for us.
