Vinay Kumar & Sons

Our shop is number 14 in the Mahatma Gandhi Market, right near Jaistamba Square in Patvipura. Vinay Kumar & Sons has been a fixture here for a long time. The market is always crowded, and you can hear the vendors calling out and the traffic from the square at all hours. Our shop is quite small, but we’ve managed to cram a lot of stock onto the shelves. It’s one of those places where if you ask for something, we probably have to dig through a few piles to find it. We know a lot of the other shopkeepers around here, and we often share tea or talk about how the market is doing. It’s a very traditional way of doing business. We don't have a computer system for everything; a lot of it is still recorded in notebooks or just kept in our heads. The fans hum overhead, and there’s usually a bit of a breeze if the front door is open. People come in to chat as much as they do to buy things. It’s a family thing, with different generations helping out when it gets busy. We don’t do any big promotions or anything. We just open up the shutters every morning and wait for the regulars to stop by. It’s a simple life, being part of the Mahatma Gandhi Market community and watching the day go by.
