Zasha Uniforms is tucked away in Jai Hind Gali. We are right opposite Gulzar Bagh in Poosimalaikuppam Village. It’s a quiet village mostly, though the street gets a bit busy when people are heading to work or school. Our building is full of the sound of sewing machines humming all day. We make uniforms for all sorts of places. Sometimes it’s hundreds of identical shirts, and other times it is something different. We have a few tailors who have been with us for years. They know exactly how to cut the fabric to save as much as possible. We don't use fancy software for everything; a lot of it is still done with chalk and measuring tapes. The light comes in through the big windows in the afternoon, which helps with the stitching. We keep the rolls of fabric stacked against the walls. It smells like cotton and a bit of machine oil in here. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to stop and wait, which is just part of living here I guess. So we sit outside in the Gali and talk to the neighbors. It’s a community thing. We aren't a giant factory with thousands of workers. We are just a local company in the village doing our best to get the orders out on time. We take pride in a straight seam, even if we don't say it out loud much. It’s just us doing our work.
