You can find my place at H.No.B-6-112 in Ram Nagar. It’s right on the Main Road, near the 21 No. Phatak on Rajbaha Road. Finding it is usually a matter of looking for the landmark of the railway crossing. I’m Ambrish Kumar Gupta, and I’ve been working as an architect from this house for a long time. It’s a bit of a mix between a home and an office. I have my drawing boards in one section and books piled up against the walls. Working near the Phatak means you get used to the sound of the trains passing by every few hours. It’s become a rhythm that I don't even notice anymore. Designing buildings isn't just about making them look nice. It’s about making them stand up and stay dry and fit into the space available in Ram Nagar. My desk is usually covered in site maps and structural notes. I spend a lot of time visiting sites, so I’m often in my car or walking around with a measuring tape. When I’m back at the office, I try to make sense of everything I saw. It’s a practical way of working. I don't use any fancy jargon to explain things. I just tell people how the rooms will fit or why a certain wall needs to be where it is. It’s honest work, and I’ve been lucky to do it right here in my own neighborhood for all these years.
