The air in Mandarpore always has a bit of a kick to it. We are situated in Ramnagar, which is part of Midnapore (E). If you walk past our place, you will likely sneeze because of the spices we are grinding. It’s not a large factory, just a couple of rooms where we keep the sacks. We have the red chilies and the turmeric roots drying out when the sun is good. The rain in Midnapore can be heavy, so we have to watch the roof for leaks. My wife helps with the accounts and some of the local ladies come in to help with the packing. We use simple plastic bags and a heat sealer. It’s nothing like those big brands you see on TV. We just get the spices from the local markets and clean them up. Some days the power is steady and some days it isn't. We have an old radio that plays music while we work. It’s mostly just us and the smell of spices all day long. The building is a bit old and the paint is peeling near the door. We don’t mind it much as long as the work gets done. There is a big tree outside where we eat our lunch in the shade. It’s quiet out here compared to the city. We like it that way.
