Prakrti Sanrakshak Environment Foundation

Our group, the Prakrti Sanrakshak Environment Foundation, is based out of Maya Debi Kahar’s house. You can find us near the Kalipahari Durgamandir. It’s a very local thing. We all grew up around this temple and we hate seeing the area get dirty or the trees getting cut down for no reason. We aren't scientists or anything like that. We are just people who like the outdoors and want to keep it looking okay. We spend a lot of our weekends picking up trash around the temple grounds or planting small saplings wherever there is a bit of dirt. Maya Debi is kind enough to let us use her space to store our shovels and bags. We don't have any staff or a payroll. It is just whoever shows up on a Saturday morning. Sometimes only two people come, and other times we have a dozen. We don't have a big plan or a fancy strategy. We just look at what needs cleaning and we do it. It’s hot work most of the year, and we get pretty tired. But when you see a small tree actually growing, it feels like we did something right. We don't ask for much, just for people to stop throwing their plastic on the ground. It is a slow way to change things, but we are not in any rush.
