Universal Wood & Crafts

Universal Wood & Crafts is located out in Village Pattlion, right along NH 72 in Sirmaur. Being near the highway means there is always the sound of trucks passing by while we work. The workshop isn't very large, but we have enough space for the wood piles and the workbenches. We started this place because there was a need for local wood work in this part of Sirmaur. Most of the time, the floor is covered in wood shavings and the air smells like fresh sap. We don't use a lot of big machines; mostly we use hand tools that have been around for years. My brother and I usually open up early in the morning before the sun gets too hot. We spend a lot of time just picking through pieces of wood to find the right ones for whatever we are building that week. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait or just do the hand-sanding parts until it comes back on. It is a quiet life for the most part, except for the noise from the road. People usually find us because they see the sign while driving towards the city. We keep a few finished pieces near the front so visitors can see the texture of the wood. It’s a dusty job and our clothes are always covered in it, but it’s what we know how to do here in the village.
