Shant Handloom Industries has been based here at 148-A in Sukhdev Nagar for quite a while. It’s a residential-feeling area but we have our setup right here where the work happens. Handloom work is slow by nature, so things don't move as fast as a factory, but we keep the rhythm going. There is always the smell of cotton and the sound of the equipment in the background. We have a small group of people who really know their way around a loom. It’s not the kind of job you learn in a day. We deal with various types of fabrics and threads, mostly stuff that feels traditional. Our office space is just a desk and some chairs surrounded by stacks of finished material. It gets a bit cramped when a new shipment arrives, but we manage. We aren’t a huge corporation with a board of directors; it’s mostly just us trying to make sure the quality stays okay. Sometimes the power goes out and we just sit outside for a bit until it comes back. That’s just part of life here. The colors of the thread are probably the most interesting thing in the room at any given time. We don’t do a lot of talking about visions or anything like that. We just make the cloth and sell it to whoever needs it. It’s a simple business model that has kept us in Sukhdev Nagar all these years.
