Gian Spinning Mills is based out in Village Bhainswal, right off Barsat Road. Being out in the village means the air is a bit different than the city, though the mill itself stays pretty dusty from all the cotton. It’s a large building with high ceilings to help keep it cool, but it still gets quite hot in the middle of the summer. You can feel the vibration of the spinning frames through the floor when you stand near the back. It’s a steady thumping sound that you stop noticing after an hour or so. The workers come in from the surrounding areas, many of them walking or coming on cycles. We don't have a lobby or a fancy entrance. You just walk in through the main gate and find the office off to one side. There’s usually a thin layer of white lint on everything, no matter how much we clean it. We spend the days keeping an eye on the machines and making sure the yarn is coming out right. Sometimes a machine breaks down and the mechanics have to spend half the day fixing it, which is just how it goes. We don't have any big corporate slogans written on the walls. Most of what we do is just manual work and basic oversight. It’s a straightforward operation. We eat our lunch in the shade when it’s hot. It’s a quiet life out here.
