If you ever find yourself walking across Kacha Fhatak, you’ll likely see our place. Jaina Woolen Mills has been sitting here for quite a while, and we’ve become very familiar with the sound of the trains passing by the crossing. The wool business is a bit seasonal, so some months are much crazier than others. When it’s busy, the machines are going non-stop and the air is full of that specific smell of raw wool. It’s a tough job sometimes, especially when it’s cold outside and we’re trying to keep everything moving smoothly. We don't have a fancy showroom or anything like that. People usually just come to the gate or we send our stuff out to the markets. The walls are a bit dusty and the floors have seen better days, but the equipment works well and that is what matters to us. We’re just a bunch of regular folks who know a lot about yarn and sweaters. Sometimes we have to stop whatever we’re doing because the noise from the Fhatak is just too loud to talk over. We just laugh and wait for the train to pass. It’s a bit of a landmark for those who live around here. We don't try to be something we’re not, just a mill doing its job day in and day out near the tracks. It’s hard work, but we are used to it.
