About G.R. Rice Mills – Food & Beverages in Panchkula
We are out in Village Karhali, not too far from Balbehra, at G.R. Rice Mills. It is a bit of a drive from the main city, so it is mostly surrounded by fields and open sky. You can hear the mill from a long way off because there isn't much else around to block the sound. We have a lot of open space for drying the grain when the weather allows for it. The wind blows across the plains here and helps clear out the husks when we are working. We have a small crew, just a few of us who have lived in the village all our lives. We know the land and we know the rice. The building itself is made of brick and has some stains from the years of rain, but it holds up well enough. We keep the equipment greased and the floors as clean as you can expect for a place like this. Sometimes a stray cow wanders into the yard and we have to gently shoo it out so it doesn't get into the grain. The evenings are the best time here, when the sun goes down and the air cools off a bit. We finish up the last of the paperwork by the light of a single bulb. It’s quiet work for the most part, and we like it that way.
