We are based out in Surla, which is in the Bicholim area. Alcon Cement Company Pvt. Ltd. has been here for a good while. It's a bit of a drive to get out here, but it's where we have the space for everything. The air is a bit different than in the city, though we add our fair share of dust to it. We mainly spend our time making sure the cement is ready for the local builders. It’s a straightforward operation. We have a small crew and we’ve all been doing this long enough that we don’t need much supervising. The equipment is old but it still runs fine if you know how to kick it in the right spot. We don't have a receptionist or anything like that. If you come by, you’ll probably just find one of us covered in grey powder. We take our Sundays off, but the rest of the week is pretty much non-stop. The road leading up to the gate can get pretty muddy during the monsoon, which makes things tricky for the trucks. We just deal with it as it comes. It's a hard way to earn a buck, but it's what we know. Most of our customers are folks we've known for a decade. We don't put on airs or try to act like we're something we're not. It's just cement and hard work. Sometimes it's boring but usually there's enough happening to keep us awake.
