We’ve been here at No 40-C Nanjappan Gounder Mekkadu for a while now. Alamedu is a quiet place most mornings until the machines start up. People around here know us as the place where the fabric comes in and gets turned into something useful. It isn’t a fancy setup. We have the sewing machines and the cutting tables laid out where they fit best. Some days it gets pretty loud and dusty, but that is just how it is when you are working with textiles. Most of the folks working here live close by. We drink tea together at the same time every afternoon. Sometimes the power goes out and we just sit outside for a bit until it comes back on. We don’t have a big office with glass walls or anything like that. It is just a workspace where we get things done. We handle the orders as they come in. Some are small and some take us all week to finish. We try to keep things organized but sometimes the stacks of cloth get a bit high. It is a simple way to make a living. We know our neighbors and they know us. If you walk down the road, you can usually hear the hum of the work going on. We just stay focused on the task at hand. Our hands are often stained with dye, but we don't mind. We just keep going until the sun goes down and the lights go out.
