We've been at Newmochi Colony 48 for a good while now. Running an ice cream place like Maya Ice Cream is mostly about making sure the freezers stay cold enough during the summer months when the power cuts happen. It gets pretty hot around here, so people usually start showing up later in the evening after they finish their dinner. It’s a small shop, nothing fancy to look at, but we keep things clean and the floor swept. Most days it’s just us here scooping out flavors and making sure the cones don't get soggy in the humidity. We see a lot of the same kids from the neighborhood coming by after school with whatever change they have in their pockets. Sometimes we run out of the popular stuff like vanilla or chocolate faster than we expect, and then we have to wait for the next delivery to show up. It’s a lot of standing around and waiting for customers during the quiet afternoons, then a big rush when the sun goes down. We don't really do much advertising or anything like that. People just know where we are in the colony. We try to keep the chairs outside in good shape so people have a place to sit for a minute while they eat. It’s just a regular life here, dealing with the daily stuff and keeping the ice cream frozen. Sometimes the lid on the deep freezer sticks, or we have to mop up a sticky spill on the counter.
