Subhash Nagar is a nice enough area, mostly families and people who have lived here for decades. At Jyoti Sweets, we see the same faces every morning. I usually get here before the sun is even up to start the first batch of sweets. The glass display cases are old and they have a few scratches on them from years of use. We don't have a big sign or anything flashy. Most people just walk over from their houses when they need something for their evening tea. The kids often come in with a few coins they’ve saved up, looking for something small. It’s a quiet kind of work. We spend hours peeling nuts or checking the temperature of the syrup. My apron is never clean for more than ten minutes because there's always something splashing or some flour blowing around. We have a couple of plastic stools if someone wants to sit for a minute, but most people just take their box and head home. The light in the shop is a bit dim in the corners, but it feels comfortable. We don't try to do anything too fancy, just the traditional stuff we’ve always made. It feels good to see the trays empty out by the end of the day, knowing we’ll just do it all again tomorrow. Sometimes we run out of milk early and have to wait for the next delivery to arrive.
