Bahagwati General Fancy Store

You can find us at 15/85 on Khiless Market Street, right across from the Rathan Building near the Gandhi Murti. It’s a bit of a long address, but most people just know us as the fancy store on the corner. We carry all sorts of general items that people need every day. We have sewing kits, buttons, hair elastics, and plenty of cosmetics. The shop is quite narrow, so we have to use the walls for storage, hanging things from hooks all the way up. It gets quite busy on market days when people from the surrounding villages come into town. We try to keep a little bit of everything so no one leaves disappointed. The building itself is quite old, and sometimes the roof leaks a little when the rain is very heavy, so we have to move the boxes around quickly. I’ve worked here for years, and I’ve seen the market change a lot, but our shop stays mostly the same. We don’t have a computer or anything; I still write all the receipts by hand in a big ledger book. My wife helps me out in the evenings when the crowd gets bigger. It’s a lot of standing and talking, but we enjoy it. We like being part of the Khiless Market community. It’s a lot of hard work keeping track of all the small items, but we manage just fine. We usually lock up around eight.
