If you’re ever near the railway station in Oddanchatram, you’ll see our shop at No. 13 on Palani Road. It’s quite a lively spot with all the trains coming through and people rushing around all day long. We’ve been trading here for some time now and it’s always a bit of a scramble to keep up. The shop is packed with all sorts of different things and we spend a lot of time just organizing the stock so we can actually find what people are looking for when they come in. It’s not like those big supermarkets where everything is neatly labeled on high shelves. We’re much more of a hands-on operation. My family and I run it and we know most of the regular faces that pass by the station every day. Sometimes it gets so loud with the trains and the announcements that we have to wait a second to hear what a customer is even saying. We don’t really do much advertising or anything fancy like that. Word of mouth usually brings people in. The road outside can get pretty jammed up with traffic, especially on the busy market days. We usually open early in the morning and stay until the last few trains have gone through for the night. It’s a lot of standing on your feet and dealing with heavy deliveries coming in from the back. We just try to keep things simple and get the work done without making a big fuss about it. Anyway, it keeps us busy.
