Habmore Ice Cream

Up here in Village & Post Daltenganj, Habmore Ice Cream is a bit of a local landmark for the people in the Palamu district. It’s not like the big shops you see in the cities. We are out here where things move a little slower. The heat in this part of the country can be really intense during the summer months, so our freezers are the most important things in the building. We have to be very careful with the electricity because the power can go out without much warning out here. We keep a generator ready just in case, though it’s noisy and a bit of a pain to start up when we're busy. Most of the people who come by are from the village or the surrounding farms. They come in covered in dust and looking for a break from the sun. We don't have any fancy menus or decorations. It’s just a plain room with the coolers lined up against the wall. Sometimes we get deliveries from the bigger towns, and that is always a busy day getting everything unloaded and put away before it starts to soften. The kids in the village know exactly when the new stock arrives. We spend our evenings sitting out front when it’s finally cool enough to breathe. It’s a quiet life in Daltenganj, just keeping the ice frozen and chatting with the neighbors who stop by to pass the time.
