Ganapathy Exports is situated right on Dam Road, near the Walayar Post. It’s a pretty scenic area if you like looking at the hills. The road gets a lot of traffic, especially big lorries headed toward the border. We spend a lot of our day watching them go by while we work. We handle various goods for export. It’s mostly physical labor here, loading crates and checking that everything is tied down tight. The sun can be brutal in the afternoon, so we try to get the heavy lifting done early. Our shed is made of corrugated metal, so it gets pretty loud when it rains. We have to shout to hear each other over the drumming of the water. We’ve been at this for a while now. The owner is usually around, wearing a dusty shirt and holding a clipboard. He’s a fair man, but he doesn't like it when we waste time. We have a small radio that plays local stations all day long. It keeps the mood light even when we’re tired. Sometimes the power cuts out, and we just sit outside on the benches until it comes back on. There’s not much to do but wait and talk. We know most of the people who live along Dam Road. It’s a small community and we all look out for each other. We’re just a regular business doing regular things.
