Sonu Monu Chira Mill

Sonu Monu Chira Mill sits out in Ramnathpur Village. It’s under the Pakur Post Office in Hiranpur Block. The mill has been part of the landscape for quite some time. When the season starts, the noise of the machinery is the first thing you hear in the morning. It’s a dusty place, that’s for sure. We spend a lot of our time cleaning up after the processing is done. Farmers come in from the surrounding fields with their loads. It’s a lot of back and forth talking about the harvest and how the weather has been. Sometimes the rain slows everything down and we just sit under the tin roof waiting for it to stop. The name Sonu Monu comes from family, which is how most things start around here. We don't have a big marketing team or a website that looks professional. It’s just us and the machines and the grain. The workers here know the rhythm of the mill by heart. You can tell if something is wrong with the motor just by the sound it makes while it's spinning. We handle a lot of chira and the smell of it is everywhere, in our clothes and in the air. It’s hard work, especially when it’s hot outside and the air inside the mill is thick. But we get it done. People in the village know where to find us when they need their work handled.
